Subject: Life Sciences

 

This Life Sciences subject concentrates on equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed in everyday situations and life. It will introduce you to the world of biological studies (concepts, processes, systems and theories) and promote your interest in and create awareness of possible specialisations in this field.

Adult learners who are 21 years and older who have:

  • A General Education and Training Certificate (GETC); OR
  • A Grade 9 school report (or the old standard seven), stating that they have passed Grade 9 or Standard 7; OR
  • A recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level 1 which requires two official languages; OR
  • An incomplete Senior Certificate.

Language: Proficiency in English.

Equipment: Access to a PC or laptop with a reliable internet connection to engage with study resources on the Online Classroom.

Assessment information:

The Amended Senior Certificate Examinations take place in June/July every year. If you meet the qualifying criteria and wish to take the examinations and obtain your certificate, you must register for the examinations no later than January, to take the examinations in June/July.

Learners wishing to write these exams can register at any provincial education office, which includes the provincial head office, district offices and circuit offices.

To achieve an Amended Senior Certificate, you must meet the following requirements in the exams:

    • Pass three subjects at 40%, one of which must be an official language at Home Language level.
    • Pass two subjects at 30%, one of which must be an official language at First Additional or Home Language level.
    • Get a subminimum of 20% on the sixth subject.

Students who have previously passed their Senior Certificate subjects at Higher and Standard Grade levels, can receive credits for those subjects.

    • A Higher Grade pass is set at 40%.
    • A Standard Grade pass is set at 33.3%.

 

Exam details:

As a student, you are responsible to register for the Amended Senior Certificate examination. We will offer assistance and guidance if you require additional help to complete the process.

Exam registration is done online via the Department of Basic Education’s website or its examination centres (community centres/schools).

Exam registration is free when done online or at your local district office. Other exam venues may charge fees to process your request. Such fees are not included in the course fee.

You may register for any number of subjects per exam sitting.

You can complete all your subjects in a single sitting or over a period.

The exams are set by the Department of Basic Education.

Exams are written only once a year.

The Amended Senior Certificate Examinations take place in June/July every year. Please visit the Department of Basic Education’s website to view a list of district offices in your area.

    • Exam registration opens in October.
    • Exam registration closes in January.

The virtual orientation session will set you up for academic success and assist you in your transition to distance and digital learning at Optimi College. The aim of this session is to give you information about your course and also answer frequently asked questions.

Online classroom access

The Online Classroom is easily accessible from your cell phone or PC. You have access to a range of resources and facilities, designed to support your learning journey. You can also submit assignments on the Online Classroom. Managing your assignments is simple, fast, and reliable.

Online study planning/guidance through 40 weekly modules.

Our study calendar is a study plan that allows you to manage time spent on studies and ensures that you set aside enough time for assignments, completing of talks and preparing for exams. The study calendar will highlight essential deadlines and milestones.

Digital quizzes

These are pre- and post-assessment quizzes aimed at testing a student’s knowledge on an ongoing basis. These quizzes are mainly multiple-choice and are auto-marked, thus results are given immediately so that students can learn from the instant feedback whilst still processing the content.

Online forum interaction

Instant messaging is available for students who are logged into the Online Classroom. Students can also interact with other students who are registered for the same subjects as they are. In addition, the dedicated coordinator posts webinar schedules for the month, updates on material, extra resources, exam information, and weekly motivational content on this platform.

Exam booking assistance

Our team will provide guidance in terms of exam bookings as all students are required to make these booking themselves, either online or at their local district office. These exam centres are allocated by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and are subject to change due to the availability of the specific centres. We will confirm the time, date and logistics for your exam sitting.

Study material and courier delivery included

Our study material and textbooks are included in the total course fee, so you do not have to worry about sourcing your own textbooks. We will send you all the necessary study material to complete the course. Material is sent via courier, at no additional charge when you reside in South Africa!
