Unit EMC1 – Environmental Management
Element 1 (Foundations in Environmental Management): This module covers the basic principles and concepts that underpin environmental management. Some of the topics covered in this module will include environmental sustainability and natural resource management.
Element 2 (Environmental Management Systems): This module covers the design, implementation, and maintenance of environmental management systems (EMS). An EMS is a set of policies, procedures, and practices that an organisation uses to manage its environmental impacts.
Element 3 (Assessing Environmental Aspects and Impacts): This module covers the methods and tools for identifying and evaluating the environmental aspects and impacts of an organisation’s operations. Environmental aspects refer to the elements of an organisation’s activities, products, and services that interact with the environment.
Element 4 (Planning for and Dealing with Environmental Emergencies): This module covers the planning and response to environmental emergencies, such as spills, leaks, fires, and other incidents that have the potential to cause harm to people and the environment.
Unit EMC2 – Assessing Environmental Aspects and Associated Impacts
Element 5 (Control of Emissions to Air): This module covers the strategies and techniques for controlling and reducing emissions to the air from industrial, commercial, and other activities.
Element 6 (Control of Environmental Noise): This module covers the management of noise pollution, which can have negative effects on human health and well-being, as well as wildlife and natural habitats.
Element 7 (Control of Contamination of Water Sources): This module covers the strategies and techniques for controlling and reducing contamination of water sources from industrial, commercial, and other activities.
Element 8 (Control of Waste and Land Use): This module covers the strategies and techniques for managing and reducing waste generation, as well as for controlling and reducing the impacts of land use on the environment.
Element 9 (Sources and Use of Energy and Energy Efficiency): This module covers the sources and use of energy, as well as the strategies and techniques for increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Assessment information:
The EMC has two unit assessments and learners must achieve a ‘Pass’ in both units to be awarded the qualification.
Learners will be provided with a choice of possible exam sittings within a given year. It is the learners’ responsibility to plan their examinations according to the schedule provided.
Learners will have five years to complete their qualification. The five-year period starts from the date that they pass their first successful unit. Any unit that is five or more years old will not count towards the qualification and a learner will need to retake this unit if they still want to complete the qualification.
Assessment type:
- Unit EMC1: Open book examination. conducted online. Learners will have a 24-hour window in which to download the examination paper, complete their answers and then upload their answer sheets.
- Unit EMC2: Practical assessment conducted in a workplace. Students will do an environmental risk assessment in an actual workplace environment.
